Controllers -Must you get the job right after Oklahoma City?

Controllers -Must you get the job right after Oklahoma City?
I recently asked a question about going back to school for something else after getting out of the CTI program and wondered if I should do that before or after Oklahoma City. Someone said go to Oklahoma City right away and go back to school after. I was wondering if that's even possible - Can you graduate from the Academy and not accept a job somewhere as a controller right away? And when you decide to get the job later, would you have to go through training all over again?

When you are sent to OKC, you've been hired and are on the FAA payroll. It's not like going to college where you're on your own nickle. I've never heard of anyone completing training at OKC and then going off to do something else. AFAIK, you'd have to resign and take the chance of not being hired back. If you're determined to get additional schooling, either wait till you are certified at your duty station and then attend school part time, or complete whatever schooling you need and then apply for your ATC position.

In order to go to Ok City you have already been offered and accepted a position. You can't just not go to your facility, basically quitting, after completing your training at OK City and expect to ever be rehired by the FAA. You could go to school part time after completing your training at your facility. Lots of controllers do that.

I'm sorry if I was the one who confused you. Once you're in Ok City, you've already got a job slot. The FAA will actually call you once you've graduated the CTI program..or up to a couple months before. It is said that you can turn down facilities up to two times..IE the first two choices or places they would like you to go you can turn down. But once they call you up a third time with the name of a facility, you'd best take it. They are not required to call you back at all, not even a second time. But three would be a fair number. When the FAA purchases your plane ticket to Ok City, it is kind of a round trip ticket; your final destination will be in the vicinity of your facility. What I meant by going back to school later was this: once you have your job, do evening school/classes/training or whatever it is you want to do. The FAA understands the importance of an education, especially higher education. Hope I haven't confused you further :)
